Lewis County Deputy Sheriff Stephen Michael "Mike" Gallagher died shortly after 8:05 PM PST on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, of injuries suffered when his patrol car hit an elk the night before.

Deputy Gallagher was responding to back up another deputy on a domestic violence call when his vehicle struck the elk about 8:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. 12 near Packwood.

Deputy Gallagher is survived by his wife, Andria, and their two children, Alex, 10, and Andrew, 6.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 26, at St. Martin's College in Lacey, Washington.
