Suspect: In custody.

Officer Maher was shot and killed with his own handgun after he had pulled the suspect out of a brawl with the suspect's brother and the suspect's ex-girlfriend. The fight broke out at the corner of 272nd Street and Pacific Highway South when the suspect broke free, fled on foot across 272nd Street into Kent and tried to climb a fence. A struggle ensued, when police said the suspect grabbed the officer's gun and threatened his brother and ex-girlfriend. Officer Maher intervened and was shot in the stomach, below his bulletproof vest. The suspect's brother grabbed him and held him to the ground until police arrived. Officer Maher was transported to Harborview Medical Center where he died. Officer Marr is survived by his wife and three children.
