Deputy Steve Cox was shot and killed while questioning a suspect.

Deputy Cox and other deputies had responded to a shooting in the southwestern part of the city. They found a truck driver who had been beaten and shot at least once in the head. As they were questioning people at a nearby house party, Deputy Cox was interviewing someone in a back bedroom when he was shot in the head. Two deputies responding to the gunshot were fired upon when at least one returned fire, killing the shooter. Deputy Cox was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his wound.

The truck driver's injuries were not life-threatening. He had hit a parked truck which started the initial altercation.

Deputy Cox was a 9 year veteran of the King County Sheriff's Department. He is survived by his wife and a young child.

Edwanton A. (Eddie) Thomas died while struggling with a male subject in a home on Vine Road. Officer Thomas had been sent to the location to assist paramedics with a combative patient who was suffering a medical emergency.

When Officer Thomas arrived at the scene, the patient began to struggle with him. Officer Thomas depressed the emergency button on his radio and was then able to handcuff the suspect. When backup officers arrived they found Officer Thomas unconscious next to the male.

Officer Thomas was a member of the US Coast Guard Reserve. He had served with the Brier Police Department for 9 months and had served in law enforcement for a total of 6 years.

26 year old rookie SPD Officer Joselito Barber was killed when his patrol car was broadsided by a vehicle traveling at an estimated 80 mph on a city street. His vehicle was struck at the intersection of Yesler Street and 23rd Avenue at approximately 4:00 am.

The driver of the vehicle is currently in custody. She was resleased from jail less then two weeks ago and was wanted on four warrants, including a DUI warrant, when she ran the red light and struck Officer Barber's patrol car. Alcohol is belived to have been a factor.

Officer Barber had graduated from the police academy only 5 months earlier.
